OTHER - PERSONAL LOOKBOOK APP - PROBLEM

*From this point on all posts related to this brief will be labeled 'Brief 02' and 'App'

After giving my presentation and presenting this idea, one of my contemporaries sent me a link to an App that already exists and is fundamentally the exact idea that I had.

The app is called ASAP54.

This originally really frustrated me as I had had this idea since the end of Level 04 and had only really just had a chance to develop it. I was in two minds as to whether to continue with this brief or completely scrap the idea. After a discussion with Danny, I have decided to adapt the brief and use this discovery as research.

The discovery of ASAP54 is positive in that it shows the technology is there and being used. Whilst in discussion with Danny, it was highlighted that ASAP54 is merely an app, like Shazam, that only gives you a outcome without any depth or understanding of the item of clothing or song.

With this in mind, I intend to produce an app that, instead of just copying the item you are searching for and giving you several possible outcomes, is more focused on style and the historical & cultural reference. In essence, a visual style encyclopedia.

The issue with this, when compared to ASAP54, is its commercial capabilities. Where as ASAP54 gets revenue from brands paying to be promoted, so that they appear more often, my concept would not have this as it does not focus on a branded item but on a style or an era. This could cause a problem with the actual development and upkeep of the app however it would not effect the design of it. With this in mind I intend to develop the idea and produce design work to a level where it can be pitched to developers and
investors / companies / advertisers.
