Ben from Ditto Press acme in to talk to us about what he does, what has influenced him and how he works.
These are my notes from his talk;
What is being said
Who it's being said to
Editorial / Art direction
Take photos / Interview - Do more
Self publishing
Journalism - write / read more
Academic writing as articles
Speak to people - Important
Just tools
Have to find my own specific methodology
Don't always go with your first idea
How do I work best?
Brief is about our methodologies and how we work - more important than the topic. Find interesting methodologies and ways to research.
Free up pre-thought
- Move away from original idea
- Usually too obvious
- Do something different
After Ben had spoken to us about himself and his work he handed out a brief and we separated into groups to discuss the brief and methodologies.
As a group we began to write down our usual methodologies and how we usually work.
Methodologies;
How you go about working
Own individual outcomes
Help each other with process
Show how we go about something
- Structures
- Similarities
Whilst we were doing this as a group I also proceeded to do some of my own research into methodologies.
I first looked at the dictionary definition of 'methodologies'.
1. A set or system of methods, principles and rules for regulating a given diciplin.
2.a. Any underlying principles and rules of organisation of a philosophical system or inquiry procedure.
2.b. The study of principles underlying the organisation of various sciences and the conduct of scientific inquiry.
Extremely specific to you - UNIQUE
Colour / Sound / Physical
Context / Content / History
What is the way I work?
- Don't do things that don't aid you.
Get out of restraints.
Answer rather than aesthetic
What do I do?
Notes
Defenition
Visual Research
Get lost ->
Contextual Research
Lists / Mind maps
Music / Space to work
Books / Library
Think - Idea
Coffee / Water
Have to write things down
Write plans / schedules / organise - don't always follow
Structured / Small scale / Pen on paper
Does this limit me?
What could I do?
Surround myself with inspiration
Physical
- Material processes
- Actual work
Photograph - digital / film
Experiment more
Read / Write
Experience
Exhibitions / Events
Talk to people
Read / Watch / Absorb - culturally aware
History / Heritage / Stories
Interesting ways to work
Collect
Film / Video
Inquisitive
Name my method
Get into the habit of thinking about how I work
What do I find pointless?
What do I find crucial?
See everything in a certain way
Try it and see if it works
From this talk and workshop I wanted to research in almost completely different way to try and find my own niche way of working. I want to try all of the things I don't usually do, listed under 'What could I do?'.
This should provide me with a new and alternative body of work, something unlike I have ever done before.
