BRIEF 03 - DBA / CAPITAL NORTH - IDEA DEVELOPMENT

After our feedback from DBA we decided to do as they suggested and had an intense session trying to develop our concept. The concept at this point was entirely theoretical and had not visual presence at all.

Our concept at this point was to focus on the four components that make up Capital North, rather than the four cities. We made this decision as we thought that the components were found in all the cities and the components were fundamentally what made up Capital North. By doing this, it also allowed us to be inclusive rather than exclusive, enabling us to set a benchmark that, if other northern cities (such as Newcastle or Sheffield) met, they could be part of Capital North.

At this point we all did a few more sketches trying to formulate some kind of visual language or graphic identity from the concept we had.

What I wanted to do was create a symbol of four parts all connected together four way to show the connection between the characteristics, cities and Capital North. After several experimentations I could not get this how I wanted it and I also realised that using the cities was something that we decided not to do.

I then just sketched some very basic logo ideas in an attempt to move the project on, with little success.

Even though I had not sketched anything that really felt suitable for Capital North, I produced a few digital versions in an attempt to find a mark or something that could be developed into a visual language.
