After our initial meetings as a group, we decided to each go away and come up with so ideas of what we could use for the project.
We had decided on making sure we tried to visually represent four entities coming together to create one. I noted down some key words and elements of Capital North for me to work to.
The brief required us to produce four separate posters, one for each city. I initially started looking at how four separate posters could be designed to work individually and together.
After coming up with a few ideas but not being convinced by any of them, we decided - as a group - to move away from this idea. We made this decision for a number of reasons, the first being that we were making no progress with it and getting too caught up in the concept without actually developing the design.
At this point we all looked back at our research and tried to focus our ideas down. We initially thought about what other city brands and rebrands have included such as archaic buildings and architecture or emotive symbols associated with the place. We decided that as Capital North was a united entity this was not appropriate and nor was reducing it down to a single form.
We made the decision that we needed to develop a dynamic visual language, rather than a graphic identity.
We broke Capital North down into eight parts: the four cites and the four components.
I started by sketching out different possible ways of creating a visual language using visual metaphors for the cities, components and Capital North as a whole.
The numeric values allowed me to create a variety of shapes and grids. I took this further looking at how the lines used and the shapes created could form different grids to build an language from.
I decided to try and digitise some of these ideas and see how they would work as a full repeated pattern.
On further reflection I decided that to create a visual language out of a grid like this was too complicated and would have too much going on to create a concise and memorable language.
At this point we collectively brought our ideas together to get feedback from DBA.
As we had no fixed concept at this point the feedback we initially received was on the concept of Capital North.
They suggested that we need to have an intense session deciding on the direction we wanted to take this. They also suggested that we try not to constrict ourselves and think as big as possible.
They were also very incisive about what audiences interact and engage with and what are the most important elements to consider on a project like this as well as working in a team.
Their notes to aid us with the development our project.
