I started my research as I would on any other project. I looked up the definition of a library
Library
- A place set apart to contain books, periodicals, and other material for reading, viewing, listening, study or reference, as a room, set of rooms, or building where books may be read or borrowed.
- A public body organising and maintaining such an establishment.
- A collection of manuscripts, publications, and other materials for viewing, reading, listening, study or reference.
- A collection of any materials for study and enjoyment, as films, musical recordings, or maps.
- A commercial establishment lending books for a fixed rate.
From this I noted down my initial ideas :
Modernist Library
- Not traditional
- Concrete floors / white walls
- Large rooms
Remove all negative connotations of a library
I listed all the things I'd associate with a conventional library, both positive and negative :
I posed myself the question; why would someone want to spend time looking for information when it is available at their fingertips?
Expanding on my original thought, I wanted to create an identity for a library for creatives. Every item and element of the library would be considered.
- Polished concrete floors
- White walls
- Furniture and lights from companies like; Vitra, Eames, Emeco, Bocci, BordBord, Zuzunga, Flos
- Artisan cafe
- Workspace
- Large light providing plenty of natural light
- Macs and iPads
It would be a creative resource.
I also thought about what gets people to interact with a space :
- Visuals
- Sensual
- Galleries
- Museums
- Visual library
- Cinema
- Creative Library
I also thought of a possible name but I was not yet convinced with it due to the connotations associated with it : The Den
I also did some visual research into traditional and other libraries :
