Before we go and visit companies we need to first establish issue content, have a business plan that includes printing and distribution, so we are prepared for any questions that we may be asked by said companies.
Once that is done we will need to make ask the companies whether they want to be involved and discuss with them what we are doing. If they want to be involved we then need to arrange interviews, photoshoots and tasters.
We will need to get a photographer and a videographer on board as well as potentially requiring a copywriter. We could do this all our selves if the magazine was to be smaller and more regular but if it is going to involve a lot of content, we wont have the time.
To do this professionally we need to set up the business side of the magazine and have a strong and structured plan prior to getting external people involved.
I wrote a list of some things we needed to decide on as a group;
- Content
- Page numbers
- Print - cost / colour
- Stock
- Size
Whilst discussing this with Issy in the studio we both had quite different ideas. So instead of debate on what would be best we decided to each come up with a content proposal, present each one to the group and see what they thought.
My concept was a smaller publication, with few pages, that covered less content but the content it did cover was covered in a greater depth. My concept also only uses two colours on a single type of stock to cut costs.
My proposed publication is 40 pages including cover.
There are five main categories within the publication, these are;
Food / Coffee
Fashion / Shop
Lifestyle
Drink
Events
Food / Coffee, Fashion / Shop, Lifestyle and Drink may also include interviews with the people who work / own the company.
In terms of content for each section my proposal has;
2 x 3DPS = 12 pages for Food / Coffee
1 x 4DPS = 8 pages for Fashion / Shop
1 x 2DPS = 4 pages for Lifestyle
1 x 2DPS = 4 pages for Drink
2 x 1DPS = 4 pages for Events
The format of these sections and where they sit in the publication could vary from issue to issue, along with the layout, however the same grid system should be used throughout.
This is 36 pages with cover. The other four pages will include an introduction to each issue, a bit about the contributors and a contents page at the front of the publication, and a what's on section and credits at the back of the publication.
I have illustrated what could go on what page;
I intend to do a full mock up of the magazine, extending the one I have already done.
