I had a very strong visual idea of how the publication should look, so before our next group meeting I decided to mock up an issue how I think it should look.
My concept for the magazine used two colours an one stock to make it cheaper to print. I had originally wanted a full colour photograph on the cover but after speaking to Jason from Evolution Print I decided against this.
The cover would contain a full bleed monotone image. The image depending on the prominent colour would (if this colour was too light) be in black and (if the colour was not too light) the image would be in the chosen colour.
The chosen colour, taken from the original cover image, would dictate the spot colour of this issue. The spot colour would be the second colour used throughout the rest of the issue. Images would be monotone in either black or the chosen colour on a high white stock. The spot colour would be used on each page as either the colour of a monotone image, type colour or a overlay block of colour to add a different dimension to the publication.
I chose to use three different typefaces in the publication; DIN Alternate Bold as the sans-serif and Didot Regular ans Italic for the body copy.
For the mockup issue I selected some possible content. The chosen content was The Allotment, a high end alternative men's fashion boutique in the heart of Leeds, Sol - the man who is behind The Allotment, Angelic - a rooftop bar and restaurant, Mrs. Atha's - an artisan coffee shop and Narrating Objects - an exhibition on at Leeds City Gallery.
I chose an image that would work as a cover image.
From this image I picked out a colour that would be used as the spot.
The photo was then converted into greyscale and then duotoned.
I then mocked up the whole of the issue, dissecting the logo for the contents page and using the chosen colour throughout.
