BRIEF 05 - END OF YEAR SHOW - WAYFINDING DESIGN, DEVELOPMENT AND MOCKUPS

We had allocated ourselves roles and my initial role was to design and develop the wayfinding for the proposal.

I began by walking round college taking photos of possible locations the the wayfinding could be distributed.

I looked for large prominent areas both inside and outside of college that would be suitable locations for promotion and wayfinding.

Course Identifiers:

I had already had an idea for how the courses could be identified outside each of their areas. The concept for this bit of wayfinding was 'WE ARE' followed by a list of all the courses displaying work at the show, highlighting the course location you were at in some way.

I wanted to try and incorporate some hand drawn elements to make it more personal and approachable. I drew a selection of different scribbles that I then converted into vectors in Illustrator to be used to highlight the course area you were in.

I produced a variety of different possibilities:

The thoughts on this idea were that although it did obviously highlight the chosen course, there was still too much of a focus on all of the courses.

Out of the designs produced this was the most functional, all the other courses were readable, however it was clear what was the chosen course. The digital score, rather than the hand drawn style, also looks cleaner.

I tried the preferred design with the colours flipped but preferred it with the green type and black score. This is in keeping with the bigger concept as the changing word or words were in green to emphasise this.

This variation works aesthetically as the chosen course clearly stands out but, again, it is not entirely in keeping with the bigger concept.

The hand drawn idea was interesting in prospect but when executed just makes the work look messy on this layout and scale. The hand drawn or written element is something I would still like to include in the project in some way.

I experimented with having the green for the background and changing the colours or the text and scores. This was, again, not entirely in keeping with the bigger concept but did stand out and was extremely noticeable, so something that could possibly be used somewhere else in the project. For this part of the project the text was a little bit illegible and unreadable.

I mocked up the preferred design onto a location it could be used it to show it in situation.

I also quickly tried some other wayfinding ideas just showing what course by having the 'WE ARE' followed by the course.

These worked but were too basic and not as interesting as the original idea.

Notices:

As continued development of the wayfinding, I designed notices to show the viewers what level they were on and what courses were on each level.

Using the green background that had not been applicable to the course identifiers, I produced two outcomes, flipping the colour of the text to see which highlighted the floor you were on most effectively.

The colour way decided by the team was that the black worked better as the colour to identify which floor you were on as the white became slightly lost in the green. I designed a further notice and mocked them up in possible locations ready for the presentation boards.

Map:

As a final part of the wayfinding for the project, I decided to design a fold out floor plan that would detail where everything was located.

Using a floor plan of the college, I traced over it, only drawing the components and areas that I wanted.

I then digitised the floor plan in Illustrator so that I could manipulate it as I pleased.

I reduced the thickness of the lines as they were too bold originally.

I then tried to colour the areas where important things were but this reduced the quality of the image and looked messy.

I decided to flip the idea I had come up with. I decided that the fold out booklet background would be the green and the map would be white with numbers placed in the important location and each floor would also have a key so that the numbers could be identified.

I mocked the map up, again from presentational purposes, to show how it would look when printed.
